Chapter 5: Tackling media myths (14 mins)

Chapter 5: Tackling media myths
Summary

Refugees and asylum-seekers are frequently subjected to negative reporting in the media. In Newcastle, Save the Children works with a primary school to help children share the positive aspects of their changing local community. The children express their ideas for welcoming new arrivals through a ‘wish garden’ and develop a mural for the local Tyne and Wear Metro station. In Glasgow, two students lead a media campaign to prevent dawn raids by immigration officials and the devastating impact these have on the school community. In Bristol, a youth work setting and a secondary school use the Refugee Awareness Pack to increase awareness and tackle media myths about refugees.
