Chapter 4: Creating a safe environment (18 mins)

 |
Summary
Refugee children and young people can experience racism and bullying and often feel unsafe. In Newcastle, Save the Children works with a primary school to help children learn about how the local community is changing. The children express their ideas for welcoming new arrivals through a ‘wish garden’ and develop a mural for the local Tyne and Wear Metro station. In Portsmouth, the Ethnic Minority Achievement Service works with Year Seven pupils in a local secondary school to tackle bullying through peer tutoring. In north London, a charity established by a primary school helps refugee children and their families feel less isolated and safer by making links with the wider community. |
